WASHINGTON, DC - The Alliance for Marriage today welcomed the Senate vote on AFM’s Marriage Amendment as the first step in the process of putting the future of marriage in America back in the hands of the American people.
“Today’s Senate vote marks the start of a democratic debate that AFM hoped to create when we drafted our marriage amendment over three years ago,” said Matt Daniels, president of the Alliance for Marriage. “We introduced our marriage amendment in both the House and Senate in order to let the people decide the future of marriage and our amendment will continue to gain ground so long as activists continue to strike down our marriage laws in court.”
“Most Americans believe that gays and lesbians have a right to live as they choose. But they don’t believe they have a right to redefine marriage for our entire society,” Daniels added. “Americans want our laws to send a positive message to children about marriage, family and their future.”
“The constitutional problem created by almost a decade of activist lawsuits to destroy our marriage laws demands a constitutional fix,” Daniels stated. “AFM’s marriage amendment has been introduced with bi-partisan sponsorship in two successive sessions of Congress in order to protect the common sense view of marriage shared by the vast majority of Americans of every race, color and creed.”
“AFM’s Federal Marriage Amendment will protect marriage while leaving all issues of benefits to the democratic process in the states,” Daniels said. “AFM believes this centrist approach embodied in our amendment offers hope of a democratic solution to the debate that has been forced on our nation through the courts.”
The Alliance for Marriage is a non-partisan coalition whose Board of Advisors includes Rev. Walter Fauntroy -- the DC Coordinator for the March on Washington for Martin Luther King Jr. -- as well as other civil rights leaders, religious leaders and national legal experts.
